Hm – so, once again I sit here and try to sort out what could make so many people afraid of so many other peoples happiness. What do you think is going to happen? Not so long ago the end of the world was going to be at hand if black people started going to white schools. We will now have, in just a few months, a sitting black president. And although some of you may still feel it is the end the world, I think it is more his politics and policies than race.
Yet, somehow, the opportunity for any two adults to marry is not OK. What are you afraid of? Worried about what your kids hear in school? Well take some freaking responsibility for your kids knowledge base, sit and TALK to them yourselves. They are after all, YOUR KIDS. While your at it, push all your other fears and bigotry on them as well. No reason to let the good stuff die out.
Will you be forced to allow them into your neighborhood? Will you be forced to let them marry in your church? Will you be forced to associate with them? No. Not forced. Here is surprise for you though, they are already your neighbors, in the pews next to you, talking to you, giving and creating and helping to make your community a place of safety, beauty and TOLERANCE.
No – your church will not have to perform any wedding it does not want too. It already discriminates on that with heterosexual couples. (dig deeper, delve)
Now, I have a pretty busy day planned for this Sunday. Church in the morning. A church filled with people happy about Prop 8 passing. Probably filled with people freaked out about the coming administration too. A meeting right after about work opportunity. Variety of duties for two house/pet sitting commitments. The last and deciding race of the 2008 NASCAR season.
Then, this – “a peaceful, family-friendly march through downtown San Clemente to show out support for gay rights” CRAP! Now I am FORCED to make a decision. Do I sit in the back and listen to a man that has already suggested that our scriptures make it clear what I should think/believe on the issue? Do I “proclaim the death of Christ” by taking communion and then, go march for gay rights? Do I miss the race because the march time sucks? Do I do something that resembles exercise? If I do, should I wear chaps?
To my sister and friends I must apologize and be honest here – I do not mind being a hypocrite and going against the teaching of my church, I do not mind sweating a little, even in chaps. But it’s THE LAST RACE! You guys – come on!
I am not committing to anything. No promises.
Here is the info I got -(shortened)
We are organizing a peaceful, family-friendly march through downtown San Clemente to show our support for gay rights. We are inviting you to come show your support!!
The march will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, in front of the public library at 242 Avenida Del Mar. We’ll walk east up the sidewalk on Del Mar, take a short walk north on El Camino Real, then head back toward the library. Feel free to bring kid-friendly signs, blowhorns, or anything you want to bang on!
One of the most troubling aspects of the recent lobby against gay rights is the misguided message that those rights somehow threaten families — that gay rights must be denied to “protect” families. We reject that message, and we want this march to communicate that.
The march will probably be small, but it’s an opportunity to express our support. Looking forward to marching with you (and your family) on November 16!!!
Now – leave me and my secret red-neck alone to figure this all out. Why don’t I have a DVR? WHY!?!?!?!
Peace, Ant-Knee
