Have you ever heard that thing about vampires, they cannot come in and hurt you unless you invite them? Similar but opposite, that thing about not stepping outside to talk to the police. They can’t come in either, uninvited.
This makes doors a pretty interesting thing. A dangerous thing. Something that deserve more respect and attention along with a shit-load more though before using or allowing to be used.
Solid doors are the worst. Can’t see anything threw them. Just have to open the damn thing and then try to decide what to let in or if to walk out. If you do not open it far enough, to clearly see all that is on the other side, you can make a pretty fucked up choice. Then again, open it too far and the other side can see in, too far in for comfort.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all doors came with a little port-hole, like walking into a restaurant kitchen in a movie? Or the little door-with-in-a-door! Even better – you can control how long it is open and how wide. If anything tries to see in or sneak in, you can slam it shut. Or, when you open it wide to see all that is out there, you can block the view in with your own big head!
The fact that a door does work both ways is nice to think about and say. In reality – not of much use. Which ever mistake you made, letting in or walking out, that the door will accommodate the opposite does not mean that it or who will use it.
Someone once told me, “repeat every question in your head before answering it. Do not rush.” Great advice. It is hard sometimes but still worth the effort.
I think I should apply the same to doors. No matter how basic or mundane, every single time before I use a door, I should say in my head or even aloud, what I am trying to accomplish and what that accomplishment could lead to. In or Out – what can it lead to and how hard will it be to reverse?
Until “Un-Fuck-Error-Remover” is an over the counter spray on, I may just glue, screw and nail all of my doors shut. Climb in and out of windows from now on.
